SMS Equipment celebrated the grand opening of its newly expanded Timmins facility on Tuesday, in the west end of the city on Hwy. 101.

The company sells, leases and services mining, forestry and construction equipment across North America, from Newfoundland to Alaska. The $30-million project in Timmins added a 37,000-square-foot shop that can handle the largest equipment in the world.

President and CEO Robin Heard says SMS is also committed to sustainability in the mining and resource industries, and in the community.

“State of the art features of the building help meet SMS Equipment’s pledge to reducing our carbon footprint,” he told the ribbon cutting ceremony, “from water recycling to E-charging stations to solar energy generation, just to name a few.”

The sustainability pledge drew praise from Ontario mines minister George Pirie.  He says it speaks to the company’s confidence in the north… at a time in which there’s a mining boom.

“Because that’s who we are as miners,” the minister remarked. “We are the best, and when our service companies espouse the same values that we haqve about sustainability, it just makes me feel tremendously good.”
