We are seeing precious metals rise in the shadow of the Ukraine invasion. Gold is trading around US$1923.80/oz, down a couple percent on short term profit taking since reaching a high of US$1,975/oz overnight. Kitco News notes that the next resistance levels could be between US$2,022/oz and US$2,089/oz. Some such as Frank Holmes of US Global Investors is suggesting that 20% volatility in gold is a non-event, and that gold could go to US$2,800/oz. Other commodities are also moving.
On Tuesday, February 22nd, 2022, Red Cloud hosted a webinar with Orex Minerals. President and CEO, Mr. Ben Whiting, P.Geo., provided a corporate overview, a summary of Orex’s three projects (two in Mexico, one in Canada), and provided some hints for what is yet to come in 2022. With this report, we are also transferring coverage of Orex Minerals Inc. to Koby Kushner.
Orex Minerals (REX) has released its initial mineral resource estimate for its 4,997 ha, 45%-owned Coneto Ag-Au JV project in Durango, Mexico. The MRE was prepared by the operator of the project, Fresnillo plc (LON:FRES, Not Rated), which has a 55%-interest in Coneto; Fresnillo is the largest silver producer in the world and Mexico’s second largest gold producer. The maiden MRE outlines contained metal of 19.1M oz Ag and 538k oz AuEq. It is based on 106 diamond drill holes (38,515m) that were drilled between 2010 – 2017. Six separate zones on the property were included in the resource estimate. In our view, the delivery of a maiden mineral resource estimate is a significant milestone achievement for the company. This will double the company’s total resource base, bringing its valuation lower on an EV/oz basis and further widening the valuation gap to its peer group.

Q3 operating and financial results are to be announced over the next few weeks. While gold is out of favour, prices have been trading within a narrow window that have allowed companies to continue to turn profits, despite an uncertain outlook. Late summer was hard on most commodities as precious and industrial metals alike fell on a slowdown in global economic growth due to surging fuel prices, Chinese power restrictions, labour shortages, disrupted global supply chains and a stronger USD. Metal prices came under further pressure as major property developer Evergrande missed further bond payments, impacting iron ore and copper prices. With this update, we provide new commodity price and FX forecasts, updated coverage estimates, and a fresh set of top picks.
